A classic overnight safari visiting the Gnaoua musicians in Khamlia village, sleeping in deluxe nomadic desert tents.
This premium 2-day private itinerary "2-Day Desert Camp & Traditional Gnaoua Music Stargazing" starts directly in MERZOUGA and takes you on a deep journey into the true magic of Morocco. Traveling in comfort with a private air-conditioned vehicle and your own dedicated, professional driver, you will discover stunning contrasts: from the bustling medieval medinas and ancient handcraft quarters to the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. The supreme highlight is a spectacular camel trek at sunset into the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara, followed by an unforgettable overnight stay in a high-end luxury nomadic camp. Complete with handpicked authentic Riads, guided local historical walks, and absolute flexibility, this tour represents the ultimate customizable Moroccan escape designed around your pace.
Our driver will pick you up from your hotel or riad in Merzouga village in the mid-to-late afternoon, timed so that we reach the dunes with plenty of daylight left before sunset. At the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea, Morocco's tallest and most famous dune field, with individual dunes rising over 150 metres, camel handlers are waiting with a string of dromedary camels saddled and ready. After a brief introduction to mounting and riding — genuinely straightforward, and comfortable even for complete first-timers — we set off in a slow, swaying line across the sand, climbing gently rising dunes as the golden late-afternoon light deepens into the rich oranges and pinks for which Erg Chebbi is famous among photographers. After around forty-five minutes to an hour of trekking, we arrive at our deluxe nomadic desert camp, a cluster of comfortable Berber-style tents with proper beds and en-suite facilities, nestled in a sheltered hollow among the highest dunes. Settle in and watch the sunset from a nearby dune before dinner, a traditional multi-course Berber meal, often a slow-cooked tagine, served in the camp's communal dining tent. After dinner, we take a short drive to nearby Khamlia village, home to a community descended from West African migrants and enslaved people brought to Morocco centuries ago along trans-Saharan trade routes, who have preserved a distinctive musical tradition known as Gnaoua — hypnotic, rhythmic music played on the guembri (a three-stringed bass lute), large iron castanets called qraqebs, and drums, historically used in spiritual healing ceremonies and now recognised by UNESCO as part of Morocco's Intangible Cultural Heritage. We enjoy a live performance in an intimate, informal setting before returning to camp for the night, where the desert's near-total absence of light pollution reveals one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth.
For those willing to wake early, this morning offers a genuinely memorable way to close out the trip: climbing a nearby dune in the soft pre-dawn light to watch the sunrise transform the desert from muted blue-grey to soft pink and then brilliant gold, with almost no one else around at this hour. Afterwards, return to camp for a simple Berber breakfast of flatbread, honey, olive oil, and sweet mint tea, taking in the view over the dunes one last time. Your camel handlers will then be ready to guide you back across the sand to the edge of the dune field, where your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel or riad in Merzouga village, typically arriving by mid-morning. This short but genuinely immersive overnight experience delivers the two things most visitors come to Merzouga for — a proper camel trek into the dunes and a night beneath the Sahara's extraordinary stars — with the added cultural depth of a live Gnaoua music performance that most standard desert camps don't offer. Many guests describe this short overnight as the perfect distillation of everything they hoped a Sahara visit would be — the camel trek, the silence, the stars, and, thanks to the Khamlia detour, a genuine cultural layer most standard camps simply don't offer.
