4-Day Tour from Marrakech to the Desert

Today we will depart Marrakech at a relaxed pace, heading south in your private air-conditioned vehicle toward the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, with several stops at panoramic viewpoints over terraced Berber villages and mineral-rich rock formations along the way. Descending the far side, we stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar above the Ounila River and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, taking an unhurried guided walk through its narrow lanes to the old communal granary at the top for panoramic views over the valley. After lunch in Ouarzazate, the 'Hollywood of Africa', where we visit the Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family, we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, also known as the Valley of Roses. We check in to a traditional kasbah-style hotel with wonderful terrace views over the valley's dramatic folded rock formations, allowing a relaxed evening and a good night's rest before tomorrow's continuation toward the Sahara. Lunch today is enjoyed at a more relaxed pace than a typical fast-track crossing, in keeping with this itinerary's easier tempo.

After a relaxed breakfast overlooking the valley, we continue toward Todra Gorge, one of Morocco's most dramatic natural landmarks, where sheer pink and orange limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon in places barely 10 metres wide. With no rush today, we take a proper hour or more here for a walk along the canyon floor, photographs of the towering walls, and perhaps a mint tea at one of the small cafés built into the cliffside. Continuing south at an easy pace, we arrive in Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea in the late afternoon, where camel handlers meet us for an unforgettable sunset trek across the dunes, the changing colours of the sand as the sun drops toward the horizon difficult to describe and impossible to forget. After roughly 45-60 minutes of gentle camel trekking, we arrive at our exclusive desert camp among some of the highest dunes in Morocco. Enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and later, gather around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth. Lunch today is usually a relaxed affair back at camp, a proper midday break in the middle of this unhurried desert stop.

For early risers, this morning offers one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: climbing a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold. Afterwards, return to camp for a simple Berber breakfast of flatbread, honey, and sweet mint tea before saying goodbye to your camel guides and driving back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver awaits. Rather than rushing the entire way back to Marrakech in one push, today's relaxed pace allows for a proper stop back at Todra Gorge or the Dades Valley if you missed anything on the way out, and a comfortable overnight in or near Ouarzazate, the 'Hollywood of Africa', with time in the late afternoon to visit the Atlas Film Studios or simply relax after the desert crossing, ahead of tomorrow's final stretch back over the High Atlas. Lunch en route is typically a simple stop in or near Ouarzazate, giving a proper break on this more relaxed return day.

After breakfast, we complete the journey back to Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas one final time via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, with the scenery every bit as impressive on this second crossing as it was on the way out — your driver is happy to stop again at any viewpoints you'd like a second look at, or to pick up local minerals and amethyst from the roadside stalls along the pass. As the road descends the western side of the mountains, the palm groves surrounding Marrakech come into view, and we arrive back in the city by early-to-mid afternoon, with time to check in, rest, and enjoy a final stroll through the medina or toward Jemaa el-Fna square before your onward travel plans. Over these four relaxed days, you will have crossed the High Atlas Mountains twice, explored the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, walked beneath the towering cliffs of Todra Gorge, and spent an unforgettable night sleeping beneath the stars among the dunes of Erg Chebbi — all at a comfortably unhurried pace that leaves room to properly enjoy each stop along the way.
