8-Day Agadir Beachfront to Merzouga Golden Sandhills

Your eight-day journey begins the moment you land at Agadir Al Massira Airport, where your private driver will be waiting with a sign bearing your name. Agadir is a thoroughly modern beach resort city, rebuilt in a planned, orderly style after a devastating earthquake levelled the original town in 1960, offering wide boulevards, a long sandy Atlantic beach, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. After checking in to your hotel, the rest of the day is free to unwind by the sea, with a promenade of cafés and restaurants right on the beachfront. The morning and afternoon are yours for swimming, sunbathing, or simply relaxing on Agadir's long, sandy beach, widely considered one of the safest and most reliably sunny in Morocco. For those who prefer to explore a little, we can arrange a visit to the Kasbah, perched on a hill above the city with panoramic views over the bay, or a stroll through Souk El Had, one of the largest traditional markets in the country. This unhurried pace is very much intentional — a genuine holiday by the sea before the adventure inland. We recommend simply enjoying the rhythm of beach life today — a swim before lunch, a long lazy lunch of grilled fish by the promenade, and an afternoon nap if the mood takes you, since the pace picks up considerably from tomorrow onward.

This morning we depart Agadir, heading inland through the fertile Souss Valley, home to the great majority of Morocco's argan oil production, toward Taroudant, a walled town often nicknamed 'Little Marrakech' for its similar red pisé ramparts, though on a considerably smaller, calmer scale. We take an hour or so to walk along the ramparts and through the town's atmospheric souks. Continuing east, the road climbs into the Anti-Atlas and joins the route toward Ouarzazate, nicknamed the 'Hollywood of Africa' thanks to the Atlas Film Studios, where productions including Gladiator and Game of Thrones have been filmed. We check in for the night, with time to visit the Taourirt Kasbah if timing allows. Lunch is typically taken in Taroudant's souk area, with time afterwards to browse for silver jewellery or leather goods at a relaxed pace before continuing the final stretch to Ouarzazate.

This morning we visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar above the Ounila River and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, taking a guided walk through its narrow lanes up to the old communal granary for panoramic views over the valley. Continuing east toward Merzouga, we arrive on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea in the late afternoon, where camel handlers meet us for an unforgettable sunset trek across the dunes, the sand's colours shifting from gold to deep orange as the sun drops toward the horizon — a striking contrast to the ocean sunsets of Agadir a few days ago. We reach our exclusive desert camp among some of the highest dunes in Morocco, enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and gather around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under an exceptional starscape. Lunch is usually taken near Ait Ben Haddou or in Ouarzazate itself before we press on toward the dunes, watching the landscape grow steadily more arid and open as the afternoon progresses.

For early risers, this morning offers the chance to climb a nearby dune before dawn and watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold. After a relaxed Berber breakfast at camp, today continues the gentle, unhurried pace of this trip — rather than immediately setting off, we build in a full free day to properly experience the tranquil silence of the desert. Optional activities can be arranged locally, including a visit to a nearby Berber family for tea, or a short 4x4 excursion to explore the quieter, more remote reaches of the dune sea at sunset — the deep desert sunset tracks this itinerary is named for. As the second evening approaches, we again watch the sun set over the dunes before another traditional dinner and a further night of music and stars. Depending on your energy, optional short excursions by 4x4 or a quiet walk with your camel guide to a nearby quiet dune are available before the second sunset over the desert.

After a final Berber breakfast at camp, we say goodbye to our camel guides and drive back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver awaits for the return journey. We retrace our route back through the desert gateway region toward Ouarzazate, with your driver managing a comfortable pace and stops for lunch and to stretch your legs along the way, before overnighting in or near Ouarzazate ahead of tomorrow's final return to the coast. We typically stop for lunch en route, giving your legs a proper stretch after the camel trek and 4x4 transfer, before settling in for a restful night in Ouarzazate.

After breakfast, we complete the journey back to the coast, retracing the scenic route through the Anti-Atlas and Taroudant, with time for a final stop in the town's souks if you missed anything on the way out. Continuing through the fertile Souss Valley, we arrive back in Agadir in the late afternoon, with time to settle back into beach mode after the mountains and desert — the transition back to the Atlantic coast makes a fitting, relaxing close to this journey, and the rest of the evening is free to enjoy the beach or a final seafood dinner by the promenade. Lunch today is usually taken in Taroudant, a good final opportunity to browse the souks before the short remaining drive to the coast.
